Glossary of Entomology Terms and Meanings. This is a list of the most taxonomic terms used.
Other terms not listed may be found by consulting a dictionary on entomology.

A

Abdomen. The posterior end of the three body divisions.

Acanthus. A spine,a spur.

Acuminate. Tapering to a long point.

Acute. Pointed, forming an angle of less than 90 degrees.

Adhesive. The eggs(Ova) of the phasmid, which is glued to a surface.

Adult. The final stage of the insect during which reproduction may occur (Often by means of
parthenogenesis) without the male's reproduction organ.

Aedeagus. The male intermittent organ, the distal part of the phallus.

Aeruginose. Bluish-green in colour.

Agamic. Reproducing parthenongenetically, that is, without mating.

Albus. (Latin). Pure white.

Antenna. (pl - antennae). Paired sensory appendages, one located on each side of the insects
head.

Anal segment. The tenth abdominal segment.

Arboreal.   An insect that generally lives in the top part of the foodplant.

Autonomy. The breaking off a damaged leg or limb at a specialised point, with possible
regeneration.

Bisexual. Having both sexes (Male/Female) in one individual.

Biology. The study of life and structure of living things.

Body length. The combined length of of the head, thorax and abdomen. The cerci and
operculum are usually excluded.
